A new category is being introduced to all UKCO Power and Endurance competitions from the start of the new year. The new category has been added due to discussions with athletes at regional events and through feedback received.
What is the new category?
The Open category will be applied for both male and female (Male Open, Female Open) Power and Endurance competitions. There will be no weight categories, it is simply one category for everyone.
Who is it for?
The Open Category is for anyone who does not fall into the current categories. This could be for any number of reasons, a few examples being:
Lack of appropriate weight-class
Not wishing to compete in current gendered (Assigned At Birth) categories
Unable to adhere to current anti-doping regulations
Will the sets/weights be different?
The sets/weights for the Male Open will be the same as the Male category, and the sets/weights for the Female Open will be the same as the Female category.
Why is it needed?
The UKCO recognises that not every athlete will fit into a specific category. The aim is to provide a competitive pathway for EVERY athlete and increase opportunities for participation.
When does it start?
The first competition to have Open categories will be the UKCO Nationals held on 7th February 2026 in Basingstoke. Going forward, all UKCO Regional events will have Open categories.
Do I need to qualify for the Open category at Nationals?
For this year’s UKCO Nationals on 7th February, you do not need to qualify. Anyone can enter.
How do I enter the UKCO Nationals?
Fill in this sign up form. Entries close on 30th November.
Will I qualify for worlds?
At this time, there will not be an Open category at the WSWCF World Championships. The current pathway stops at UK Nationals level. The UKCO will be strongly encouraging the addition of the Open category at world championship level for the future.
What about Statics and Freestyle?
For the time being, the Open category is only available for Power and Endurance competitions as this is where the feedback has been directed.
